Background

The village of Dullstroom has a rich history dating back to the Anglo-Boer War of 1880–1881 and is one of Mpumalanga’s major tourist destinations.

Situated at over 2,100 metres above sea level on the Eastern Escarpment, Dullstroom is known for its cool climate, clean air and trout fishing.

Post-Covid semigration boosted development activity, yet the town remains heavily dependent on tourism, which accounts for approximately 95% of the local economy.

The permanent population consists of approximately 500 residents in town and around 5,000 residents in Sakhelwe.

Current Situation

Dullstroom has experienced fragmentation between various representative organisations, resulting in duplication, conflict and stalled development.

This highlighted the need for a single, neutral and professional structure to evaluate initiatives based purely on merit — leading to the formation of DSD.
